About SEED:
The mission of SEED schools is to prepare students academically, socially, and emotionally, for success in and beyond college in a public, college-prep, boarding school setting.
 
Based on the success of the first two schools in The SEED School network, one in Washington, D.C. and one in Baltimore, Maryland, The SEED School of Miami opened its doors to 60 new students in the sixth grade in August 2014 and will expand to serve 220 students in grades 6, 7, 8 & 9th grade during the 2017-2018 school year. At full scale, SEED Miami will grow to serve 400 students in grades 6-12, 100 percent of whom will come from underserved communities across South Florida.
 
As outlined in Florida legislation, an eligible SEED Miami student are all Florida residents, at risk of academic failure, and come from a family whose income is below 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. They must also meet at least one of the below four additional risk factors:
 
  • The child is served under the child welfare waiver demonstration, (to include foster care) or has been declared an adjudicated dependent by a court
  • The student’s head of household is not the student’s custodial parent
  • The student resides in a household that receives a housing voucher or has been determined eligible for public housing assistance
  • A member of the student’s immediate family has been incarcerated
 
All students live on campus between Sunday afternoon and Friday afternoon and transportation is provided back and forth to home and school on the weekends.

Position Summary:
The primary purpose of the Split-Shift Resident Advisor is to monitor students during the morning hours prior to the start of the school day and provide additional support in the Student Life Program during afterschool and evening hours. Split-Shift Resident Advisors will report to and work with the Overnight Manager to handle all emergencies and student issues that occur during the morning hours.
 
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
 
  • Demonstrates ability to nurture each student entrusted to their care
•      Attends to students’ personal safety
•      Protects the rights and dignity of individual students
•      Attends to students’ health care and mental health needs
•      Teaches healthy lifestyle routines to include nutrition, hygiene, and proper sleep
•      Models the words, behaviors, and values deemed appropriate for a member of the SEED community
  • Teaches students  appropriate social skills while praising positive decisions and redirecting inappropriate actions by utilizing the Model of Care
•      Responsible for assisting in the management and maintenance of the house/residence hall facility
•      Maintains house programs
  • Communicates with parents, administrators, Life Skills Counselors and teachers about student behaviors and/or trends
  • Facilitates engaging morning activities
  • Assist Student Life Counselors in facilitating evening activities
  • Motivates students to begin their day on a positive note by setting goals, encouraging all children to put forth effort, and reminding them that they are supported
  • Recognizes individual and house progress and accomplishments as they improve and grow
  • Oversees morning routines, which could include but not limited to:
    • Wake up
    • Chores
    • Preparation for the school day (morning hygiene routines)
    • Morning activities
    • Breakfast
    • Transition to classes, including monitoring bus ride to school

Education/Experience:
 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associates’ Degree or equivalent, in social sciences or related field
  • 1-2 years direct experience in adolescent development, residential/boarding education, teaching, or related fields
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent, in social sciences or related field
  • 2-3 years direct experience in adolescent development, residential/boarding education, teaching, or related fields
